ALL IN TO VOTE
The Challenge
I was given the exciting challenge of bringing college students together with one collective goal: voting. I believe everyone has something valuable to contribute to the conversation, and therefore, everyone’s opinion and contribution matter.
The research
To start this project, I had to think about what would get me to vote this year if I wasn’t a registered voter; even asked a friends who i knew weren’t registered to vote, “what would get you to vote?” I found that many college students struggle with two things: One, they don’t know where to begin; two, they don’t feel like they have much influence in the outcome of the vote. So, the solution to this challenge became clear. I had to find a way to tell college students when to vote, and I had to empower them to feel confident in their vote.
Founded in 2016, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge believes that higher education has a responsibility to prepare students to be active voters upon graduation. With the addition of voting registration to existing processes such as orientation or classes, ALL IN has proven to improve civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation.
In 2012, the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement, through its influential report A Crucible Moment, highlighted the need for the United States to reclaim higher education's civic mission. This report called on colleges and universities to integrate civic learning and democratic engagement more deeply into their campuses. Responding to this call, institutions across the country made significant progress by the time the ALL IN initiative was launched in 2016. They successfully increased student volunteerism in their communities, expanded service-learning course offerings, and began recognizing community-based research in promotion and tenure decisions. Additionally, many institutions established dedicated offices or centers to support and advance these civic and democratic engagement efforts.
ConTEXT
Concepts
Recently, there has been a growing trend of innovative typography in designs aimed at Gen Z. Our approach will incorporate playful typography combined with icon and emoji animations, creating visuals that resonate with the dynamic aesthetic commonly found on social media platforms. The use of interesting type layouts, alongside well-paced but energetic animations will create an eye catching experience for the target audience.
Utilizing bold typography, our design leverages scale, stretch, and composition to craft an animation that effectively aligns with the client’s call-to-action. This approach ensures the animation remains visually engaging and relevant, while also adhering to contemporary design trends suitable for social media platforms A minimal color palette not only makes this design bold and legible, but it also maintains the reality of students’ impact on voting.
Unfortunately, I originally went with my first direction, Kinetic Blitz: Your Future, Your Movement, but the type & animation was illegible and thus I had to return to square one: a direction that would be able to capture the animation style of my initial idea, and get my fellow college students to vote. Which led me into my second direction, The Pieces of Our Future, a project with the same focus but in a different, more legible fur coat. In the end, I am happier with the final result. I hope that it helps someone, anyone to contribute to whatever their beliefs may be.
I HAD TO LET GO
ANIMATION
In my previous attempt, my animation lacked a significant number of animation principles. It lacked power and engagemnt. So, when it came time for my second attempt I made sure to include more animation principles. The type is now also handled in a manor that allows viewers to view and engage with the social media post.
Well, I can only hope that this animation can encourage college students to learn more about how to vote, and thus how they can be a part of the solution to OUR future.
